Here are some more highlights:

• Export time has been cut in half. I have a 2.53GB M1 base computer with 4 GB RAM and it was able to create a 2.13GB ProPhoto RGB version of a 36MP 8MP image in less than 2 minutes.
• Testing with a 2011 Mac Mini provided an even faster 7 minutes to export.
• In the process I learned that a Camera Raw Library produced 2 files containing raw data, the Preview image and the exported file, and that once you save the image it is located in the Library rather than the Image folder.
• Finally, even if you dont have a M1 computer, its worth considering upgrading your RAM. By doubling the amount of RAM on a MacBook Pro from 4 GB to 8 GB, I was able to get a similar reduction in export time and RAM usage.

Here is a quick summary of the tests:

• I used a Canon 400D, a Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II, a Nikon D600, and a Nikon D300S.
• The image was created at 36MP (4:3) and exported at 8MP (4:3) using Aperture.
• The images were exported as ProPhoto RGB with a gamma of 2.2.
• The exported files were saved at PNG in Landscape orientation.
• I used Aperture, Lightroom Classic, and Photoshop CS6 in a combination of automatic and custom settings.
• The combination of Aperture Camera Raw 14.3 and the M1 base computer I used produced the fastest export time.
• Using the M1 base machine with 4 GB of RAM along with Photoshop CS6 produced the second fastest export time.
• Using the 2011 Mac Mini with 2 GB of RAM created the slowest export time.
• Using the Mac Mini to export required the least RAM.
• Using the 2012 Mac Mini with 4 GB of RAM required less than 2% of the RAM used by the 2012 MacBook Pro with 8 GB.
• The RAM usage seems less favorable than I predicted. This may be the result of the base machine having less RAM and the need to share the memory with the GPU.
• While the 2012 MacBook Pro is a great computer, the 2012 Mac Mini has a 15-inch display so it may be small enough for an occasional project.

The first time you open it, the Look & Grade feature in the new update features a “Banner” look, which is what I think Lightroom Classic should have. The new feature comes with a handful of presets. For example, the “Banner” preset offers a simple look with a white end cap and a black banner and the “Photoshop Catalog” and “Lightroom Catalog” presets both offer factory-like look with a black end cap. The Look & Grade feature in the new Cracked Adobe Camera Raw version also comes with other great preset, such as “Colorful” and “Smooth. “

Lightroom Beta for the Web has been available since October 2017 and Lightroom Classic has been available since February 2018. Together they provide the most complete editing experience in the Adobe Creative Cloud.

For the new Sony DPP III is the future RAW developer for Sony cameras.
For this you must use EXR files, than anything else and all your work must be in linear color space. Exif is not enough in that case. That means, you must use Cine DPP Exif colour space – Sony DPP Color space is too basic for RAW. Also you can be sure that Sony will not use exif data from your originals. They will compute own highlights, exposures etc and they will modify your colour profile by changing channel levels. I am not sure that was ever tried in past but it is possible in next camera software update. Sony DPP Color is good but not for RAW. It was created for work with Sony raw files with Sony cameras only. And that is most important part of production process – to work only with EXR.

Hi Stephen, Yes, that is a valid criticism. I hope that Lightroom can just exist in its own world. It sounds like you are already familiar with Camera Raw so I am not going to go into it any more, but if you have not been using it lately, do give it another try. It could be just what you want it to be, that is, that you dont want it to be Lightroom. I do think you will agree that another criticism of Lightroom is that it can take a long time to open and that it is difficult to find specific tools in the catalog. That is one of the primary reasons I still use Photoshop. From experience, I know that editing images in Lightroom is much more trouble than it is in Photoshop and its usually faster and easier to do it in Photoshop.

I will be looking at apps like Shredding, Baseline, Vignette and Wide in future to see how well the new enhanced GPU support performs. In the meantime, folks who own any of the following Macs can download Camera Raw 14.3 and follow the guidelines in the blog above to see if the performance improvements you would expect.
