PowerDVD had little trouble playing back Blu-ray Discs that contained UHD 4K resolution. The software will even play back 4K/60 and 1080p/30 files but typically it’s UHD’s fault that PowerDVD doesn’t play them. The issue is with playback of the streaming content from the Web and the content I have on my NAS. Content that I’ve downloaded via CyberLink’s video-on-demand service doesn’t seem to be a problem, though.

PowerDVD also plays other video formats such as AVI, FLV, VOB, MP4, WMV, M2TS, and VLC’s own TV/Web-based content format. That’s a pretty impressive list for a free player. As for audio, PowerDVD plays an assortment of formats, including MP3, AAC, WMA, OGG, AC3, and WAV files. It can also convert audio files to a variety of formats. While playing back a progressive MP4 in the Test mode, it was able to follow the audio streams in real time, such as was the case with AC3 and WMA. PowerDVD doesn’t always follow them, though. I had no trouble playing back UHD 2.50 and 2.40 HD video files with sound but the software stutters a little during playback, especially when it’s playing back full-length 4K content.

For all kinds of people the software is a reasonable solution. Home users will appreciate the options and there’s a key feature that’s missing from the standard edition. PowerDVD can play all Blu-ray discs, including 4K and UHD ones, as well as DVDs. It can also play video encoded in a variety of formats including MP4, AVI, and WMV. On the downside, you can’t watch anything on any device that doesn’t play Blu-ray discs, but who uses those any more?

PowerDVD also supports 4K Blu-ray discs. It can handle both high and standard definition content but watch it on this app you can only get the highest-res from the get-go. Anything else on your device will look pixely.

As of February 7, 2012, the CyberLink PowerDVD 17 Ultra also includes PowerDVD Ultra HD, which is worth the $20 price tag on its own. Unfortunately, PowerDVD Ultra HD is only available for UHD Blu-ray discs (and all the CyberLink products reviewed here are also 32-bit). PowerDVD is a surprisingly powerful player, just missing UHD Blu-ray. It seems like a hard sell, but when reviewed alongside similar competitors, PowerDVD still shines.
