Ive been using Paint.NET for years and I thought I knew my way around it. Unfortunately, its interface changed during my recent use, which made me lose my place. There are two main ways to use the app. The first is to simply import your image and then start working on it. You can then save or export your images to your hard drive when youre finished. Alternatively, you can use the integration features that allow you to start creating a masterpiece while your image is being uploaded to the cloud. Ive always used the latter, using tools such as rotation, sizing, and trimming functions to ensure I have the perfect bitmap.

After exploring this “in” version, its a bit more polished than the “out” version but its still not feature rich. The good news is that the features I wanted were easy to find, and I could get up to speed pretty quickly. For this reviewer, the design language of Paint.NET is powerful and easy to grasp and use.
Paint.Net’s interface is very flexible and intuitive. You can change to a wider or more narrow view window, or to a grid view if youre using the cloud. Layers are laid out as wedges. When you click on a layer, it highlights and becomes the active layer, and the wedge becomes a control that you can manipulate. You can adjust the opacity of a layer using this control. You can even change the size of the control based on the type of shape it represents.

Paint.NET is a free app and is very intuitive to use. In fact, you could turn this app into a beginner app. When you open Paint.NET for the first time, you are greeted with an interface with 4 toolbars on the left side and one toolbar down the right side. The 4 toolbars are:

Edit: Lets you edit the pixels of the image. This includes painting tools, filters, stylus tools, shapes, and layers.
View: Lets you zoom in, zoom out, and change the type of view (ex: 640 x 480, 640 x 480 crop, and a photo view).
Stencil: Lets you draw on images or shapes, and then save the selection to be used as a shape or brush in other images. You can also save a selection as a layer.
Brushes: Lets you save your own brush styles, apply brush styles, edit brush styles, and create custom brushes.

The biggest news in Paint.NET 3.5 is the new Windows Forms implementation that lets Paint.NET work on Windows 7 and Vista. This change will not have any impact on the Windows version that runs on Windows XP or on Windows 2000.

I had hoped that we would be able to release 3.5 earlier but we were unable to release it sooner because I was waiting to address and fix one last serious bug that we discovered.

We found two different bugs in our Windows Forms API implementation and one was a very difficult to find memory corruption bug. We are now completely bug free in our Windows Forms implementation and we would have released Paint.NET 2.8+ just weeks ago if it were not for this last bug.

When version 3.5 was initially being developed we hoped that Paint.NET might be able to run on older Windows versions but it soon became apparent that this would be impractical. This is why we have a new alternate version of Paint.NET that currently runs on Windows 2000 and Windows XP. For now this is an in house version of Paint.NET.

We are working on making a public version of this alternative so that we can start shipping the new Paint.NET with 2.8 and later for public release.

One of my favorite applications, Paint.NET 3.0.4 has been released and made available for public download. This release includes fixes for various issues along with a number of updates and improvements. VERY GROOVY INDEED!

Paint.NET does what it does well. It works really well. It works well with large image files. It has excellent support for the new Windows 7 features. It has good online documentation. It has excellent support for DXT compression. It has good support for PNG compression. It has good support for basic PSD files (yes, all paint programs support some PSD file formats, its the other way around for most Photoshop users). It has good support for ICC Profiles. It has great support for custom filter configurations. The user interface is simple enough to find the tools you need, but not so simple that you get lost. You can still make the file the way you want even if it’s a bit more complex than say another paint program. Plus, it has that very user friendly feature of not allowing resizing of bitmap objects. It has some downsides to it’s unique features though. It’s awful for batch-printing, unless you restrict its filters and configuration, and as it is known, Paint.NET filters work well on very large images. Anything over 100-150 MB is a mess unless you shrink the PNG’s. On top of that, the latest Paint.NET releases stop working (the updated version does not fix the issue). It’s a great free program though.
